A Divorce Story: Collab Law

Hi, I’m Katherine Miller, and I’ve been a matrimonial attorney for over 30 years. Today, I want to share a story about a client, whom I’ll call Marcy. While this isn’t her real name, her story might resonate with you.

Marcy was married for about 15 years and had two young children when she discovered her husband was having an affair. They struggled with the decision to stay married or get divorced. When Marcy came to me, she was overwhelmed with a multitude of emotions. She was angry and hurt, but she also felt guilty, as if her husband’s infidelity was somehow her fault. Most of all, she was worried about her children and whether a divorce would disrupt their lives. She was also concerned about maintaining their lifestyle.

Marcy had taken time off work since the children were born and was now considering returning to the workforce. She feared she wouldn’t earn enough to support her kids as she believed they needed.

Marcy and I spent several weeks discussing her situation and exploring the best path forward. Ultimately, she chose the collaborative divorce process. She appreciated the idea of having a professional team to support her, including myself, another lawyer for her husband, a financial neutral to address financial concerns, and a mental health professional to handle parenting issues and emotional processing.

This team helped Marcy and her husband work through their issues, create a new relationship as co-parents, and ensure they were both there for their children. In the end, Marcy achieved a great result. She is now happily engaged in a new relationship, and her children are doing well.
