Common Divorce Mistakes People Make
There are many mistakes people make during the divorce process or even while living together before a divorce. I’m Katherine Miller, and I’ve been a divorce attorney in New York City and New York State for over 30 years. Here are a few common issues we frequently see in our office:
- Overusing Social Media: Social media is not the place to badmouth your ex or soon-to-be ex. It’s also not a good idea to post about the fun you’re having with others if it contradicts what you’ve told your ex. For example, if you claim to be working late but are actually at a party, your ex seeing this on social media can create unnecessary tension and make negotiations more difficult.
- Discussing Terms Before Seeking Professional Help: Sometimes people come to my office saying they’ve worked out most of the terms except for one issue. I liken it to a sliding puzzle where you get most pieces in place but are stuck with one or two misplaced. It’s often better to seek professional guidance before finalizing terms to avoid complications and ensure a smoother process.
- Being Overly Aggressive with Authorities: It’s crucial to call the police or child protective services if there is a genuine danger to you or your children. However, repeatedly involving authorities over minor disputes can reflect poorly on you and may not help your case in the long run. Focus on serious safety concerns and avoid using authorities as a negotiation tactic.
Thanks for listening.
