What is a premarital agreement and who should have one?

A premarital agreement, or prenuptial agreement, outlines what will happen at the end of a marriage, and it is typically signed before the couple gets married. Many people feel that discussing such an agreement isn’t romantic. At a time when you’re thinking about flowers, bridesmaids, dresses, and the attire for the groom and ushers, no one wants to consider the end of the marriage. However, the reality is that all marriages eventually come to an end, either through divorce or death. It’s likely that your marriage will also end at some point, and discussing what will happen when it does—such as who will be entitled to what—gives you a valuable opportunity to set expectations for the marriage itself.

This conversation allows couples to discuss their financial expectations, roles, and plans for when children come into the picture. In fact, I believe that creating a prenuptial agreement can enhance a couple’s ability to stay together, rather than detract from the romance of their relationship.
