Tips for Men’s Divorce
Hi, I’m Katherine Miller. With over 30 years of experience as a divorce attorney, I’ve worked with many men who needed guidance on how to negotiate effectively with their spouse. Given that this is relevant for many of my clients right now, I thought it might be helpful for you too. While these tips are particularly geared towards men, they are equally applicable to women.
- Less is More: It’s tempting to explain the entire backstory of why you’re in this situation and how misunderstood you feel. Resist the urge. Stick to the point, keep it simple, and be concise.
- Don’t Expect Praise for Generosity: If you’re the one initiating the divorce, understand that your gestures of generosity might not be well-received. The focus should be on minimizing the impact rather than seeking appreciation.
- Understand the Problem First: Before making any proposals or offers, ensure you fully understand your spouse’s perspective and concerns. Let her express her side of the story before you present your proposals.
- Avoid Unrealistic Threats: Don’t impose unreasonable deadlines or make empty threats. A tight timeframe or ultimatum will only create more tension and reduce any goodwill you may have. Focus on the terms, the kids, and what’s truly important to both of you.
I have strong opinions on these matters, shaped by my extensive experience in divorce law. If you have questions or think I could assist you further, don’t hesitate to reach out. Give me a call—I’d be happy to help.
