Financial Considerations of Divorce

Many people considering divorce worry about their financial future, and in my experience, this concern often prevents them from seeking information, even when they are very unhappy in their marriage. I’m Katherine Miller, and I’ve been a divorce attorney in New York City and Westchester County for over 30 years—almost 35 years, if I’m honest. Over this time, I’ve learned that there are several key steps you can take to help secure your financial future post-divorce. It’s important to be aware of potential pitfalls in the divorce negotiation process and to plan accordingly to ensure the best possible financial outcome.
Recently, I discussed this topic with a friend, Lisa Decker, a certified divorce financial analyst. We decided to host a webinar on April 15th (tax day, though it’s been delayed this year). The webinar aims to address some common pitfalls and provide valuable information that you might not be aware of. For instance, did you know that if you’ve been married for more than 10 years and get divorced without remarrying, you can choose between your own Social Security benefits or the spousal share, and your ex-spouse won’t be informed of your decision? Lisa and I will cover many useful details like this during the webinar.
Thanks for listening, and I look forward to seeing you at the webinar.
