It’s Hard Facing Divorce Alone

Navigating divorce can be really confusing, really complicated — and it can be incredibly tough to do on your own. I’m Katherine Miller, and I’ve been a divorce attorney in New York City, New York State, and Connecticut for about 35 years.

I was thinking about this the other day and remembered being in Marrakesh, Morocco, years ago with my first husband. We went to explore the market — looking for bargains, beautiful plates, spices, fabrics, clothing, and home décor. But it was so confusing. Luckily, my ex-husband had been a Boy Scout, so he brought a compass, and somehow, we managed to find our way back to the hotel.

The next day, though, we hired a guide. And let me tell you — it was so much easier. The guide took us straight to the best shops, showed us where to find what we wanted, and helped us skip the rest. Maybe he got a commission for bringing us there, but honestly, it was worth it. The whole experience was smoother and much less stressful.

And that got me thinking — navigating divorce on your own is a lot like trying to find your way through that market. There’s just so much going on: creating a parenting plan, worrying about whether your kids will be okay, dividing assets and liabilities, figuring out the mortgage, retirement accounts, the house — don’t forget the house — and then trying to pay your own bills while planning for college. All of that, on top of the emotional weight that can completely turn you around, making you feel like you’re facing south when you thought you were going north.

Having someone to guide you through these issues — whether it’s a lawyer, a mediator, or a divorce coach — can make all the difference. Because just Googling your way through it often leads you in circles and leaves you feeling even more lost.
