Divorce and Emotions

Divorce is a complex process, and one of the most significant aspects is the emotions involved. What do you do with those emotions? They can be both beneficial and challenging. I’m Katherine Miller, and I’ve been a divorce attorney in New York City and New York State for over 30 years. From my experience, here’s how emotions can play a role in divorce:
How Emotions Can Help:
- Motivation for Change: Emotions can push you to make crucial decisions. If you reach a point where you’re done with the relationship, strong feelings like anger or hurt can motivate you to take action and move forward.
- Driving Completion: Emotions can also help you push through difficult negotiations and finish the process. The desire to move on and start a new chapter can be a powerful motivator.
- Revealing Values: Emotions often highlight what truly matters to you. They can show you what’s most important, whether it’s protecting your children, ensuring stability, or creating a new, independent life.
How Emotions Can Hinder:
- Distraction and Disorientation: Emotions can be overwhelming, making it hard to focus on practical decisions. Anger or sadness can create a sense of being stuck, preventing you from moving forward effectively.
- Impacts of Anger: Feelings of injustice or unfairness can lead to a desire for the other party to “pay” or make the process more contentious, which can complicate negotiations.
- Feelings of Depression: Sadness or depression can make it challenging to handle daily tasks and manage the stress of divorce, making the process feel even more difficult.
Many people find that coaching or therapy can be invaluable in managing these emotions and navigating the divorce process. Additionally, resources like informative videos can offer guidance and support.
