Divorce And Keep The Horse

Divorce and keep the horse

I’m a very serious and competitive horseback rider. In fact, there’s a picture of me at the National Dressage Championships a few years ago, having a great time during the award ceremony. I’m also a divorce lawyer and have been practicing in New York City and New York State for over 30 years. Recently, these two worlds have come together for me, as some of my horse friends have asked for advice about their divorce situations.

When you’re going through a divorce and you own horses, there are a few important things to consider. First, the value of the animal can be a contentious issue—how do you determine its worth, and who should end up with that asset? Second, it’s not just about the financial value; it’s about the relationship and partnership with the horse. And third, owning a horse is expensive. It’s crucial to find a way to ensure that the person who has a deep connection with the horse can continue that relationship without being financially overwhelmed, and that the sport can continue.
