Getting Divorced? What To Do Next!

Getting Divorced

Hi, I’m Katherine Miller.

After over 30 years as a divorce attorney, I’ve learned that divorce can happen to anyone, and often, without any fault on anyone’s part. Recently, I experienced a personal loss when a fire devastated my home. This event made me reflect deeply on the kind of pain and disruption that divorce can bring.

You might wonder, how does a fire relate to divorce? While they are different, they share similarities in the way they disrupt and traumatize your life. When the fire struck, it was no one’s fault, but it forced me to confront what I had been tolerating in my life without realizing it. For instance, I discovered an old, crooked slotted spoon from my college days that I had kept out of habit, despite it being less than ideal.

This experience made me question what constitutes a home, where my family belongs, and how we fit into our neighborhood. Living temporarily with my parents while we awaited renovations made me ponder the meaning of disruption and what it signifies in the context of home and personal identity.
