Prenup: A Plan For Success

I have five children, ranging from 19 to their mid-thirties. One of my favorite things is going on vacation with them. For the past few years, we’ve rented a house together, cooked meals, and created wonderful memories. We just returned from our latest trip, and while we were there, one of my daughters got engaged to her boyfriend. Although the engagement didn’t happen right in front of us, we were thrilled to hear the news when we got back.
A few days later, I received a text from my daughter asking, “Should I get a prenup?” My immediate response was, “Yes.” Here’s why:
- All Marriages End: Whether through death or divorce, every marriage eventually comes to an end. Isn’t it more romantic to plan for this eventuality while you’re still in love and planning your future together? A prenup demonstrates a commitment to care for each other no matter what happens.
- Understanding Each Other: It’s often said, “You never really know someone until you divorce them.” This saying holds true regardless of gender. Prenuptial negotiations offer a glimpse into how your partner might handle financial and personal matters.
- Planning for Success: A prenup provides an opportunity to discuss crucial topics like money, debt, work, and child-rearing. Understanding each other’s perspectives on these issues before marriage can help prevent future conflicts.
