How to Survive the Holidays as a Divorced Parent?

The holidays are coming up, and while it’s a stressful time for all of us, it can be especially challenging for those who are divorced or going through a divorce. I’m Katherine Miller, and I’ve been a divorce attorney in New York for over 30 years. Here are some tips to help you navigate the holiday season a little more smoothly.

1. Avoid the gifting wars.
Your kids love you, and years from now, they’re not going to remember who gave the “better” Christmas or Hanukkah gift. Don’t compare what you’re able to give with what your ex or soon-to-be ex-spouse is giving. Focus on being present with your children instead of trying to outdo the other parent.

2. Be flexible.
This time of year is stressful enough, so being flexible with your children’s co-parent can really benefit the kids. Whether they arrive at 10, 11, or 12, it might not make a big difference in the grand scheme of things. Holding onto resentment or anger can ruin the holiday for both you and your children, so try to let go of those feelings. Flexibility will make the experience better for everyone involved.

3. Create new traditions.
Instead of trying to recreate the holidays as they were when you were married, think about starting new traditions. It’s important to acknowledge that things have changed, and there’s no way to fully recreate what was. By coming up with new activities, events, or people to spend time with, you can fill the holiday season with fresh experiences. And when the kids are with their other parent, don’t sit at home dwelling on what you’re missing. Find something fun to do for yourself—whether it’s going somewhere new or reconnecting with old friends.

Finally, remember this: No family is perfect, no matter how it may look from the outside. Do your best to make the holiday as good as it can be, even if there are moments of sadness or difficulty.
