Work Better with Your Divorce Attorney

How can you help your divorce attorney get the best possible result for you? And how can you get the most value out of the attorney-client relationship?

That’s a great question. I’m Katherine Miller, and I’ve been a divorce attorney in New York City, New York State, and Connecticut for over 30 years.

One of the most effective ways we help our clients—and how they can help us do our best work—is by doing the homework we give them. Your lawyer needs you to gather information, and having that information allows us to serve you more effectively.

Some of it is relatively easy to collect—like bank statements, retirement account details, or getting an appraisal on your home. Other tasks, like reviewing your budget or identifying how you’re paying the bills, might be more time-consuming. But the truth is, we can’t do those things for you. You have to do them yourself.

When you take the time to complete these tasks and follow through on what we ask, we can provide you with significantly more value.

Another important step is to think through your priorities. What is it that you truly want? Don’t rely on me to define a “good” outcome for you—you should define it for yourself. When you can clearly articulate what matters to you and why, I, as your lawyer, am far more likely to achieve a result that genuinely makes you happy.
